Heartbeat Home: A mid-century residence gets a refresh

This 1957 mid-century home in Santa Fe and its art-collecting, influencer couple was yearning for the literal heart of it—the kitchen—to see a new iteration.

We had designed the renovation for the outdated bathrooms a few years prior, saving the kitchen for the right time. The main, full bathroom was overhauled implementing a steel storage cabinet and a backlighted cologne cabinet serving as storage, ambient light and showpiece. A second bath with a small footprint received an elegantly simple design with Cuban-inspired concrete floor tiles.

The finish and materials palette for the kitchen needed to check a lot of boxes, and the palette for the core of the home became green, representing the heart chakra, revitalization and progress. The speckled, terrazzo-inspired LVT floor is a nod to the home’s mid-century origins. The textural woodgrain and lacquered cabinetry mix offers a subdued surround, and the Caesarstone countertops support the no-fuss approach for the impassioned chef of the two. The tile backsplash became a fun collaborative project for achieving just the right balance mix for the verdant palette, with black fixtures dotting the composition.

The dining room was also a key point of focus, with consideration given to hosting small and larger gatherings for dinner as well as the morning rituals of reading and connecting.  The custom banquette and table underlays a playful mix of lighting.

“We are so happy with how the whole house has finally come together. With Steffany’s help we’ve been able to make everything more modern and livable, keeping it bright and fun all while honoring the original 50s design. Couldn’t be happier after all of the work to finally, really settle into our updated forever home.”
