“Battle Creek Cellars' shiny urban ‘wineshed’ is a smart new bauble in the Pearl." So says Oregon Wine Press magazine, and while we’re flattered, we had something amazing to work with from the start.

In winemaking, “terroir” comprises the totality of natural conditions — topography, climate, soil — that shape each crop of grapes. Terroir also describes the resulting character of the wine itself.

Similarly, Battle Creek Cellars’ tasting room in Portland — the winemaker’s first — creates a contemporary, unpretentious environment for the enjoyment of good wine and good company. The 2,000-square-foot space offers both indoor seating and a retail/display area. Outdoor patios invite guests to linger.

Our design draws inspiration from the Willamette Valley, Oregon’s premier wine region. There the volcanic soil is dense and nutrient-rich; it encourages deep root growth. On one wall guests find a wood sculpture depicting an aerial view of the valley in topographic relief. Along another wall runs a repeating root motif.

Chairs, bar stools, banquettes and booths are upholstered in caramel leather and a mix of textured and patterned fabrics in taupe and gray. Blond wood, cork, natural clay plaster, white counters and flooring, black surfaces and fixtures, and the living green of plants complete the palette.
